Skiing Photography

A quick update from Chamonix... Conditions have been great, plenty of snow and loads of sunshine. Despite lacking all skill, technique and finesse when it comes to skiing i have managed to haul my heavy camera rucksack around to get some pictures of the other guys. I have been aiming at getting a mix of action shots and mountain landscapes. We had a cloudy day on Sunday which made skiing a nightmare at times with zero visibility, fortunately though it made for some dramatic landscapes like the one below of the Aguille Verte popping out through the cloud. Timing was everything with being in the right place to be able to stop and get a shot and the mountain to appear through the clouds.

Actions shots have proved interesting. the mountain light is very harsh either casting everything into shadow or blowing out all the detail. A fill in flash would make a huge difference but i think range and timing would be an issue. i just need to find a suitable slope early enough in the day to get some good angle between the sun and the subject.

A couple of days to go still so i'll post another update if i get anything else interesting.
